Alocasia 'Nairobi Nights' variegata

Alocasia 'Nairobi Nights' variegata is a compact patterned Alocasia with cupped green leaves, pink-toned petioles and irregular cream-white variegation. Some leaves stay mostly green; others show larger pale areas across the blade.

Alocasia 'Nairobi Nights' comes from the Safari Series. This variegated form keeps the pink petioles and cupped leaf shape, while each new leaf can carry more green or more cream-white tissue.

Cupped leaves with changing variegation

  • Leaves: Green cupped blades with cream-white marbling, flecks or sectors.
  • Petioles: Pink-toned stems, usually less heavily speckled than many Safari Series plants.
  • Pattern: Variegation can shift from fine mottling to broader pale sections.
  • Growth: Grows from a rhizome; cold wet mix slows the roots and can rot them.

Care for pale patterned leaves

The cream-white areas have little to no chlorophyll, so the plant relies on greener leaves and healthy roots. Give bright filtered light and keep the pot warm. Cold wet substrate can soften petioles and stall new leaves, while harsh sun or strong fertiliser can mark pale sections quickly.

  • Light: Give screened window light. A grow light is useful in low-light periods if new leaves come in smaller, paler or stretched.
  • Watering: Water after the upper mix has begun to dry. Stale wet mix in the lower pot can rot fine roots.
  • Substrate: Use an open aroid mix with bark, coco chips, perlite and pumice so fine roots stay moist without sitting in dense wet substrate.
  • Pot size: Keep the plant close to its root volume. An oversized pot dries slowly and can keep the rhizome wet for too long.
  • Temperature: Keep it around 20–28 °C; cold substrate slows new leaves and can soften petioles after watering.
  • Humidity: At stable humidity, new leaves are less likely to stick while unfurling, and pale edges dry out more slowly.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly while new leaves are forming; too much fertiliser can leave brown spots or dull edges on pale tissue.
  • Propagation: Offsets or cormels may carry different pattern levels. Keep young plants warm and evenly humid so new roots start before the first small leaves dry back.

Pale sectors and root stress

  • Very pale leaves aging quickly: Keep greener leaves on the plant while they remain firm.
  • Soft petioles: Check root health and substrate temperature before watering again.
  • Brown pale sections: Review direct sun, dry air and fertiliser concentration.
  • Pest scarring: Inspect cupped leaves carefully, as mites and thrips can hide along folds and veins.

Alocasia toxicity and safe placement

Alocasia 'Nairobi Nights' variegata contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. If plant tissue is ingested, it can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children, and wash your hands after cutting damaged leaves or handling divisions.

Nairobi Nights name notes

Alocasia is a New Latin aroid genus name formed in relation to Colocasia. 'Nairobi Nights' is the cultivar name, while variegata describes the pale patterning on this variegated selection.

Fae Courts with High Intrigue
Format: Kindle
This book is one that just builds and builds and then surprises you to no end. You may think you know the villains and then you are jolted in another direction. Princess Reyna is a real gem, strong of character, a fierce fighter, and loyal to her family and kingdom. Just when you think she and Lorcan, well you know, the plot is flipped. Can't wait to see where this goes in book two.

Slow, sorry but good
Format: Kindle
This was a slow moving book. Lots of character pov chapters, lots of superfluous descriptions and endless courtly appearances stalled this book to start. Once you get into the heart of the story, it takes off. Before you know it the book is done. My favorite character is Reyna. She is so strong. She is true to herself. She gets into a lot of trouble with her headstrong ways but it's entertaining. I have high hopes for Lorcan. He is honorable to a fault. Thane had turned out to be better than I thought but i still don't like him. Eislin is useless. Great plot twists at the end. I'm looking forward too book 2.

Very detailed! Beautiful world building! Strong Heroine!
Format: Kindle
Starts off a little slow and confusing with different POV’s, but starts to all come together towards the middle to make an elaborate plot line and makes it all worth it. Beautiful world building and attention to detail as well as great writing. The cliffhanger was gut wrenching! Can’t wait for the next book!

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.

OUTSTANDING
Format: Kindle
This was very, very good. The world is vast and characters are complex. There is a good plot with a whole lot going on. This is well written. Good twists and turns and some heart breaking moments. You will love these characters, they have heart and loyalty. I am hoping that there will be several more books. We've yet to see anything from the Sea Court but only a mention of them here and there. The Wood Court was given a quick couple of scenes, and only as far as some warriors, we've yet to enter their court and the Shadow Court, I'm not sure if they will be a force for good or bad, but they definitely will play a much bigger role moving forward. This is primarily the Ice and Air Courts. Told in multiple views, which I loved, it gives you a chance to see things from different eyes. There's alot of political maneuvering and deception. I loved it and will pick up the next book as it becomes available. If you like The Fae and the courts, you should love this. I think the author has mucn in store for us.
